Remarks by Ambassador Gene Cretz
It’s a pleasure to be here and to meet so many enthusiastic students and parents.
Today you are taking part in a very long-standing and important tradition: the college fair.

This is a very exciting opportunity for you to learn about the options that exist for you and your children.

Throughout this week, my colleagues will be speaking on various aspects of “Education USA”:

Ambassador Cretz greets prospective students

·       choosing the right school;

·       the American student visa application process;

·       finding scholarships and exchange programs;

·       U.S. academic examinations and testing requirements; and

·       we’ll even have a Libyan alumnus of an American school share her experiences with you.

Education in America is unique because of its flexibility.  From community colleges to liberal arts schools to world-renowned research centers, U.S. schools offer something to everyone.

While we’d love for each of you to consider full undergraduate coursework or for advanced study in our universities, there is a wide array of programs that meet your needs – financial or otherwise.

Summer study programs provide short and intensive focus on specific academic fields; our boarding schools offer strong preparatory opportunities for high school students; community college programs lay foundations for later academic work.

There has been tremendous growth in the number of Libyans studying in the U.S. over the few years.  However, the numbers of undergraduate students have not grown as quickly as the graduate level.  We think it’s very important that we stress to you that we offer a variety of programs – not just the traditional four year academic study.

We see U.S. education as our most precious export commodity and, for you, a very wise investment.  A U.S. degree offers you a high quality education and greater post-study employment prospects, but the study abroad experience translates into so much more.  Living in a foreign culture will help you grow and develop in ways that would not have been possible had you stayed in your familiar home environment.

I think you would find that American campuses offer challenging and welcoming environments for intellectual growth.  We encourage the exchange of ideas – this is why America wants you to contribute to its campuses.  Americans are eager to learn about Libya and to have you become part of their dialogue.

If you choose to study abroad, you will become a representative of your country and culture in the United States.  You will help build bridges between our countries, and develop the people-to-people ties that are vital to any bilateral relationship.

Please come visit the American Embassy’s booth on the Expo floor and come meet us.  We’re excited to share our experiences with you and to answer your questions about studying in the United States.

I hope you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to use the services of our Educational Advising Center.  The team here can provide advice on school selection, standardized testing, applications, and financial aid.  We hope these tools will help you achieve your goals.  I wish you the best of luck as you start on this journey.
