Programs for Libyan High School Students
Space Camp Exchange Program to the United States
The Embassy of the United States invites Libyan high school students and Libyan math and science teachers to apply for Space Camp, an exciting exchange program in the United States.
In the summer of 2010, the U.S. Department of State will send 20 Libyan high school students and 4 Libyan math and science teachers to participate in Space Camp at the Advanced Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama. Space Camp was founded in 1982 to promote the study of math, science, and technology. Educational classroom instruction is coupled with hands-on activities that teach teamwork, decision-making, and leadership.
At the Advanced Space Camp Academy, students from around the world experience math, science, and technology in a hands-on environment built around an astronaut setting. At the Academy, students will learn about the mental, emotional, and physical demands astronauts must face. Among their experiences, they will explore an Apollo 16 capsule and a Saturn V rocket, and experience the sensation of weightlessness.
Teachers will accompany students from Libya to the United States and attend Space Academy for Educators. Teachers will participate in astronaut-style training and partake in activities to incorporate space science into the classroom.
Students and teachers will be housed in separate accommodations for boys and girls. They will share rooms with other students and teachers of the same gender. The Department of State will pay all costs associated with Space Camp, including visa related expenses, Space Camp tuition, and international travel fees.
The Embassy of the United States invites Libyan high school students, both boys and girls, and Libyan math and science teachers, both men and women, to apply for Space Camp. Student applicants must be between 15-18 years old at the time of the Camp. Students and teachers must speak, read, and write English in order to participate fully in the program.
