Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
Attack During Carjacking
In the early morning of August 6, U.S. Embassy
personnel were attacked by armed assailants in a possible carjacking.
The personnel evaded the attack and arrived safely at their destination.
This event underscores the uncertain security environment in Tripoli.
U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain vigilance at all times. The
U.S. Embassy remains open for business.
The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens in Libya of the current Travel
Warning,
which warns against all but essential travel to Libya. The Embassy's
ability to assist U.S. citizens in the event of a crisis remains
extremely limited. If you plan to travel to Libya despite the current
Travel Warning, or already reside here, we urge you to visit http://travelregistration.state.gov and enroll in the Department of
State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest
travel updates and information and to obtain updated information on
travel and security issues. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier
for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and
possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to
avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution
if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.
The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli is located at Walee al-Ahad Street, Airport Road District, Tripoli. During business hours, U.S. citizens should call 218 91 220 3239 for assistance. After hours requests for emergency assistance involving U.S. citizens should be directed to 218 91 379 4560. The consular section can also be reached by email at consulartripoli@state.gov. The Embassy's hours of operation are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Sunday - Thursday.

In addition, the Embassy encourages U.S. citizens to review "A Safe Trip Abroad," which includes valuable security information for those traveling or living in foreign countries.
