Consular Section

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy provides limited services for American citizens, including facilitating the issuance of U.S. passports and reports of birth for Libyan-born children of American citizens, notarial services, voter registration information, emergency services, and registration of Americans residing in or visiting Libya.

The Consular Section is operating out of interim offices in the Serraj Area in Tripoli, Libya, and is open for services to U.S. citizens by appointment Sunday through Thursday, except on U.S. and Libyan holidays.  During regular working hours, 9:00-4:00 Sunday through Thursday, the Consular Section can be reached by telephone at 218-91-220-0125. General inquiries may also be directed to the Consular Section's email address at tripoliconsular@state.gov.   In case of an emergency concerning an American citizen, the after-hours telephone number is 218-91-220-0125.

At this time the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli is not authorized to process visas to the United States.  All non-immigrant and immigrant visa applications must be filed at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside of Libya.  For information on visa processing at the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, please visit their website or contact them by telephone at 216-71-107-000.

Americans living or traveling in Libya are encouraged to register through the Department of State's travel registration website and to visit the State Department's website for the latest Consular Information Sheet for Libya as well as updated information on travel and security or check this website for further information on American Citizen Services and visas.
