Congressional Delegation led by Senator John McCain visits Libya
On August 17th and 18th, Senators John McCain, Joseph Lieberman, Lindsay Graham, and Susan Collins visited Libya marking the first Congressional Delegation. The Senators met with Libyan leaders and discussed all aspects of the bilateral relationship. Following their visit, the Senators held a Press Conference in which they expressed their appreciation to the Libyan people and government for the hospitality that they had been showing and highlighted the fact that a visit of this nature would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. They stated that such a high level Congressional delegation is another indication of the remarkable transformation of relations between our two countries.
The delegation discussed the ways in which relations between the United States of America and Libya can continue on a positive and productive path. The Senators stressed that as the United States and Libya move ahead, both countries want to work closely as partners.
The delegation discussed these issues in a spirit of mutual respect and friendship and stated that the ties between the United States and Libya have taken a remarkable and positive turn in recent years, and that it is the intention of the United States to help ensure that the relations between our countries deepen in all facets of the relationship.
